FedNow® Payment Scheme: How It Works

Step 1: Create a Request for Payment (RfP)
Using ISO 20022 standards (PAIN .013), the creditor (payee) generates a real-time Request for Payment file within QuickBooks. This file acts as a payment initiation message, sent directly to the payee’s bank.

Step 2: Bank Processing
The creditor’s bank validates the RfP and processes it for distribution. Banks often provide import and batch processing services to their depositors, ensuring the message is ready for real-time settlement.

Step 3: Payment Hub Transmission
The bank forwards the RfP through a Payment Hub, such as The Clearing House RtP Hub or another FedNow® hub. This hub acts as the central processing system for real-time transactions.

Step 4: Debtor’s Bank Action
The debtor’s (payer’s) bank receives the RfP, initiates payment authorization, and processes the transaction in real-time, completing the payment cycle.

Step 5: Confirmation to Payee
The creditor (payee) receives confirmation of the completed transaction, with funds settled in real-time.
